Adoption of a half-brotherSamuel Erwin-Fitzgerald
1970 (aged 27 years)

Note: Legally adopted by Henry Glen Fitzgerald.

Legally adopted by Henry Glen Fitzgerald. Sam was a grown man when Glen and Emma Married and was in the US Army. He loved Glen and especially loved the name "Fitzgerald". It took months to have the name approved by the Army, but did get approved. He played the part of an Irishman through out his life.

He was a gay man, a musician, playing the organ beautifully. Sam worked in Angelina County, Texas as a DJ for a radio station, but it is not known where he is located at this time or if he is alive.

To call him our half brother would not be what we would want, but being adopted through our dad, Glen, we had to accept the relationship.

Shared note

ABOUT MY SISTER" Written by Glynda Ann Fitzgerald Cumby 2006

Marian is my baby sister and we are the sole survivors in our family. We have always been close and have shared a special love. When you are the only two people left in a family, that is especially nice.

Marian is the sparklier one of the two of us. That's very appropriate, since usually, even her clothes sparkle. She has the most beautiful blue eyes I've ever seen-with the exception of Steve Cumby, my son. He inherited his Aunt Marian's blue eyes. Music has always been a part of our lives. Marian has a wonderful soprano voice.

Marian has been Leonardonized ever since she met and married Leonard Parent. They both like to sing and to dress in costumes for different events. Their wedding was a production of Our Fair Lady and many of the guests came in costume. There never was a wedding that was so much fun.

Marian and I long ago realized we have a special connection. When I lived in California and she was here in Houston, I'd write her letters, but she would never answer. I couldn't call her because our budget was too tight, but she was working. So when I needed to talk to her, I would just spend the day thinking of her-ESP'n her I called it-and it would not be long before she picked up the phone and called me. Sometimes when I answered the phone and discovered it was she, I'd break out laughing, and she would say, "You did it to me again!"

For the first time in our adult years, Marian and I live close enough to each other to spend a lot of time together. We do get into mischief sometimes, though. For example, we color each other's hair. Not long ago, she was coloring my hair and it came out purple. And then royal blue. And then turquoise. (The turquoise was realty pretty). And then key-lime green pie.. (We were shooting for a blond!) After our initial shock at seeing purple hair, we spent the day laughing and trying to become blond babes again.

"ABOUT MY MOM" Written by Nedra Lynn Terry Dostal

Moms, you love them, but you don't appreciate them til you are a mom yourself. From the time I was eight, it was just my mom and myself. My brother had moved to live with my dad. My dad and mom were divorced. We had some hard times and we had some fun times and not so fun times. Now that I am a mom, I'm sure that when I was in trouble it wasn't so fun for her either. I respected my mom. It only took one time for me to come home a couple of minutes late and I never did it again, cause I was grounded "INDEFINITELY", and it's not a good feeling not know when you will get to hang out with your friends again.

On the other hand, one of the best weekends that I had as a teenager was when I was grounded because I stayed after school in the 9th grade for an activity and forgot to tell my mom I would be home late. Usually, I would call her after school every day, not this one time and she was worried so when she got home from work, I was in big time trouble. I think she must have felt bad for yelling at me and although I was still grounded, she took me out to dinner and for a hair cut and a night out. Then the next day, we went to the SPCA and adopted a new kitten "Chelsea", which I had for nineteen years. I think she grounded me just so I would have to spend the weekend with her.

One of my favorite stories to tell my kids is about the one and only time I tried to sneak out was when I was spending the night with a friend (LuAnn) down the street. We went around the block to another friend house to hang out, but when we were walking back home, we had to pass my house and for some reason, my mom had the front windows open and she heard my voice. The next thing I heard is her screaming "NEDRA". LuAnn and I hightailed back to her house and before long, my mom was knocking on her door. After a good spanking, she took me back home. So needless to say, if my mom can catch me sneaking out of some one else's house, I wasn't about to try to do it at my own house, cause she had "elephant ears".

Now that I am a mom myself, I understand why parents freak out if their child is not in bed where they are suppose to be as anything can happen and we would not know where to begin looking for them.

My mom is a great mom because she did scold me when I needed it, but the best thing is that I could talk to her about anything all through my years of growing up and even now, she always gives me great advise. When she had her brain aneurysm thing, I thought there was a chance of losing her on November 29th,2005. I had a deep feeling of sadness and emptiness until she was out of the woods with her treatment, because I realized that she might not be here for much long and that was pretty scary, especially when your used to having your mom there to talk to when you want to or need to or her calling on you to check on you.

My mom has had a tough life, but she always tried to make the best of it. She is a happy person, no matter what. I only hope I am as great of a mom as she is to me and that my kids respect me like I do her. I thank God everyday for Leonard coming into her life for her to share with him the love she has inside her, because she has so much to give and I hated the thought that she would be alone for the rest of her life. She always said that she would never get married again, but I always hoped that the perfect person would come into her life and sweep her off her fee, and he is definitely that person. He is a humorous person and loves to sing like my mom and they both share the same birth date (January 24th. They are a perfect match!!!

Love, Nedra Lynn Terry Dostal

Shared note

Leonard's wife, Jean, passed away on April 17, 1986. They had been married and had had a home in Briargrove Park Subdivision for almost 25 years.

Marian had been divorced for 22 years and stayed single during that time raising her children by herself. She worked as an Administrative Assistant with various companies, banking, oil, etc.

Marian and Leonard met in their "twilight years" while they were at a "Piano Bar". They both had a real love for singing and Leonard was there with another female friend who was still married, and it was not a "so called date". Marian was a friend of this female. She saw Marian come into the bar and asked that she join them at the table. She was introduced to Leonard and things just clicked between them. The date was April 17, 1987.

Leonard liked to travel, as Jean was at most times not able to do so most of the time because of her illness. So, when Marian and Leonard met, he was ready to get out and "see the world" so to speak. So off they went - traveling the US (San Francisco, Monterey, Seattle, New Orleans, New York City, the East Coast during the fall season, Utah and Colorado). The International travel included: Vancouver, Vancouver Island, France, Monaco, Italy, Switzerland, Japan.

Leonard asked Marian to move in with him on August of 1997 and they lived together "In Sin" until October 5, 2002. They joined a Mardi Gras Krewe in Galveston the next year and just plain had a great time with their funny costumes and throwing beads to crazy people during Mardi Gras Time. They also enjoyed the Formal Ball along with other parties during with the Krewe (meaning "Group"). Each year the Krewe had a theme for the year and this particular year, (2002), the theme was everything British. Their costumes were that year in the form of the early years of the 1900 century - Victorian Style. Leonard announced to Marian that he wanted to be married in that particular costume. So, Marian came up with the theme of their wedding, "My Fair Lady".

Now in the movie of My Fair Lady, Eliza Doolittle's father was a real character and Leonard wanted to be "that character". So, Marian came up with the story that since they never showed Doolittle's bride, Marian would be "that" person. The mystery woman.

THE WEDDING The wedding was held on October 5, 2002 at the home of Leonard Parent and the soon to be Marian Parent. Her dress was a dark midnight blue sequin/beaded formal dress with a navy feathered boa around her neck. She made a large hat with feathers and net to go with it. Leonard wore a top hat with a day suit of the time with tails, - the works. Guest were invited to wear costumes and the wedding party rented theatrical costumes of all colors, women with big hats, men in their top hats. Glynda was the Producer, my friend was the Director. Mike, Marian's Son gave the bride away, Nedra (Marian's daughter) was the Matron of Honor. Lainey (Nedra's daughter) was the Jr. Bridesmaid, Mick (Mike's Son was the Ring Bearer) On Leonard side, Curtis was the Best Man, Steve Smith was the Groomsman and singer and Elizabeth was the Pianist. The Judge was a Democrat!!!!!

The first night of their wedding was at a hotel several blocks away from the house. And due to the wedding being at the house and Leonard would be there, Marian and her daughter, Nedra and her granddaughter, Lainey dressed in this room while everyone was arrivng for the wedding. It was an open bar with snacks at the house. Leonard was dressed and socializing with the guest when he announced that he was tired of waiting for the bride, he was "getting out of here" and left the house to join Marian and the others at the hotel where a black buggy with fringe and two beautiful black horses waited for them to take them to their house for the wedding. Modernness steps in here. While on the way to the house, Marian called her sister, via a cell phone and told her the buggy was about to arrive. Denounced to the guest, her sister announced that they were about to arrive and all went outside to greet the bride and groom.

THE CEREMONY

The ceremony was on the casual side. Upon arrival of the couple, the first song "On the Street Where You Live" was sung by Steve Smith (Leonard's Son-In-Law). Guest were invited to sing along throughout the wedding. Then Leonard came out singing "I'm getting Married In a Moment" with the words, "Get me to the judge on time". After his song, Marian came out dancing down the isle with "I could have Danced All Night", sitting in mens laps and dancing with her brother-in-law, Sam Cumby, and other men near the isle. Finally, the wedding song "Here Comes The Bride" and again, the wedding party came out with Leonard and Curtis Parent (Leonard's son) first with the Judge. Then Marian's two grandsons (Mick and Mitch Terry) and her granddaughter (Lainey Dostal). Nedra Dostal, Marian's daughter, served as Matron of Honor. Marian's son, Mike and Nedra both gave her away in the ceremony. Leonard and Marian sang a song together called "This Day" written by Marian's friend and the ceremony was performed. The cake was cut and champaign was served. What a day that was for them, but not before Curtis Parent, Leonard's son performed a toast to the couple.

HONEYMOON

The first night, they stayed at the Hilton near their house. They chose to go on a trip to Canada on the Rocky Mountaineer Railway Tour from Vancouver to Calvary, Canada. The train stopped on every sight of animals (bears and moose) and stopped for night time sleep. What a trip this was. It was like being on a cruise. Food was excellent, service great. It went up into the mountains to Banff and Lake Louise.

2006

Leonard and Marian are age 65 and 79 and still happy in their home. All is well today.
