Note

Written by Mary Ann's daughter, Marian Parent.

Mary Ann Hammonds graduated from Jeff Davis High School and was an excellent student, making all high grades. Her handwriting was perfect. She met Glen Fitzgerald (9 years her senior) and they married. She was only 17 at the time of the marriage. They moved to Freeport, Texas and bought a small two bedroom one bath frame house. Glen and Mary always enjoyed dancing all kinds of dances. They did square dancing and ball room dancing.

They had 3 girls, Glynda, Vira Lee and Marian. When the youngest child turned 7, Glen and Mary separated and finally divorced.

Mary went to work for Dow Chemical Company and worked hard to become a chief accounting clerk. While worrying about the health of her children, was attending classes at Alvin Junior College. Mary remained single raising the girls on her own. Struggling with the wellness of her children and her own. She had many health issues but always tried to keep life at home in good running order. She was a very strick mother. She did all that she could to keep her family together and clothed.

No matter what, her friends saw Mary as a fun happy person. She belonged on a bowling league with her five friends and dated some. Still, her responsibility was to her children no matter what. Her children saw her in another light.

When Marian moved to Houston to attend business, Mary followed her to work for Dow Chemical - Houston in the Payroll Dept. Marian married and Mary then left alone, finally met the man she thought would be her life time partner - Ray Wadsworth.

In a manner, he was her life time partner, but was not the person for her. He was a heavy drinker and encouraged Mary to drink along side him. Their marriage crumbled and she later became ill with cancer in the roof of her mouth. However, she died in the Bellaire General Hospital in Bellaire, Texas, following surgery to try to remove a blockage in a blood vessel in her stomach.

Memories of Mary Ann

Mary's Child, Glynda Ann Fitzgerald (Cumby) ask me to go back into my archive of memories and tell her and Marian something about their mother.

Probably the earlies recollections were of the years when she was in her early teens and I was six years younger...a tag-a-long little sister who wasn't wanted. But, I didn't even care! (This was before we knew that we were supposed to be permanently scarred if we were not wanted!) She had friends she liked to prowl the neighborhood with...I don't really know what theywere looking for...I just knew that whathever it was, I wanted to be in on it and they didn't want me. The bribed me with everything they had...on friend offered a set of dopll dishes that I very much would have liked to have...but, not badly enough to miss out on whatever it was that they were going to do. So, since they could not talk me into staying at home, they stayed about two city blocks ahead of me. I had to really run to keep up. Don't remember anything that happened. . . . wish I had asked after we got grown, what on earth they were hiding.

I don't remember a whole lot else from those early years, but I do recall hearing everyone talking about what a tom boy she was. She could do all sorts of acrobatics and since she had 5 brothers and all sorts of uncles and cousins close to her age, she was with them a lot and played their games. At one time, there were many of the cousins living near us, when we lived at 110 Rouse, in the Denver Addition of Houston, texs, Grandma and Grandpa Dorsey lived right next door, and they still had the twins, Glyde and Clarence at home, we well as Ivan and Josh. Nearby about 1/2 block away lived Aunt Carrie and Uncle Am whose youngest boys, John and Big Roy, were still at home. They were all in their teens at this time. Grandma and Mom gave a big Tacky Party one time during these years, and Grandma baked a cake and filled it full of black tacks, just for fun. She actually made it out of cornbread (cheaper) but iced it beautifully, and of course they cut into it only to find it full of tacks. They all came dressed in rags - tacky. That must of been fun..back in the days when teens were content to play games in the yard--fames like Flyin Dutchman, Wolf Over the River, Hide and Seek, Harmless stuff like that. It was a family affair, and all ages came.

Mary used to pal around with Pauline and Margaret Wright, who lived a short distance from us. They lived with their grandmother, granny Wright we all called her. She used to spend a lot of time in the kitchen baking delicious cookies and candy. Margaret (we called her Tody) had a crush on Frank. She used to polish my nails for me (when I was about 11) and tell me how my hands looked like Frank's. Pauline Wright later married John Hammonds, and they had two children, a girl named Peggy...I can't recall the boy's name. Pauline's daddy lived with them at Granny's and he got one of his fingers cut off in an accident. They buried the finger in the back yeard and he always told us he could tell when ants got in the area of the yard where his finger was, cause his "nub" would itch. Grouesome, huh?
