Note

Steven Vinson Cumby Written by his Mom, Glynda Cumby

Steve was born in the San Diego Naval Hospital. He was raised in San Diego, California; San Jose, Costa Rica; Carthage, Texas; and Napa, California. Graduating from high school in California, he immediately headed back to Texas. Steve, being born in California, is a Texas man. Dana (his sister) having been born in Texas, is a California woman at heart.

One of the things that was so special about Steve when he was a kid was that he was happy with his life. You could ask him how old he would like to be, and he always gave it some thought and answered, "I like the age I am now. " He liked his life.

In one's life time, one rarely has a relationship with someone who totally loves you for who you are. That person does not need you to be anyone other than the person you are. One of the people in my life who has given me this special gift is Steve. He was always warm and loving and affectionate and when things were rough, a good hug made things sweeter. For me as well as for him.

Steve didn't like school much, but he did o.k. And his dad and I did not push. He did not want to go to college. Instead he learned by going to work. Whatever job he had, he learned and he advanced, eventually becoming the supervisor of people who had degrees.

Steve's Barbara is a beautiful woman with big dark eyes. They have been married more than 25 years and there is no doubt that they love each other. As is the case for all of us, things have not always be easy in their lives. They have endured and survived.

I cannot close without talking about Steve's relationship with his grandson, Taveon. From the moment Taveon was born, Steve has played a major role in his life. They love each other deeply. They are tightly bound to one another. When Taveon was little, they played cars together. Now it is computer games and seven year old Taveon sometimes beats his grandpa. Or they may have a tv day and they laze around and watch Nascar together.

They enrich each other's lives. Just as Steve has always enriched mine.
