Dana DeAnn Cumby Written by her Mom, Glynda Cumby in 2007 Updated 2011

My daughter, Dana, was born on the day she was due. It was as if she woke me up and said, "Okay, Mom, this is the day we are due. We'd better get busy." Three hours later, she was born. She's been devoted to trying to get the world in order ever since.

Dana is a political activist. She was one of the founding members of the River Oaks Area Democratic Women In Houston, Texas. She has volunteered at Planned Parenthood for years and frequently gets her mom involved. In 2002, Dana and I went to Washington, D.C. to participate in the March For Women's Lives. We weren't alone. Over one million other people marched too. It was a wonderful experience and we had a blast.

Dana's passion is the health and well-being of teenage girls. No matter in which organization she has been involved, everything comes back to teens. Involved with DePelchin Children Services, she taught GED classes to pregnant teens and teen mothers. For each of four years, she mentored a teen-age girl and her family. She is still in touch with these women.

At Communities in Schools, Dana was actively involved in fund raising and volunteering to work with the kids who were in danger of dropping out of school. She worked with 6th, 7th and 8th graders and at times was at the school three or four times a week. For her work in that program, Dana was recognized in 1984 by City Councilman Judson Robinson III and the Fourth Missionary Baptist Church as one of the "Courageous Women in Red." As she had to be out of town, her mother accepted the award in her behalf.

In 2003, while earning her Master's Degree at the University of Texas School of Public Health, Dana served Planned Parenthood as the Chair of the Board for their Political Action Committee. She was Chair of the Board of Planned Parenthood for Houston, Southeast Texas and Louisiana. She served in this position two years.

In another year, I think is Dana will "retire." She will, however, continue her favorite task at Planned Parenthood as a volunteer in the Teen Clinic. Every Thursday afternoon finds Dana gently holding the hands of nervous teen-agers who have come for vital reproductive health care, many for their first exams and sometimes under stressful circumstances. She answers their questions about reproductive heath, contraception, and sexually transmitted disease and stays with the girls if this is her first examination.

In 2003, for all of these things, Dana was awarded the SAVVY AWARD, which is given each year by the City of Houston and Foleys. This very prestigious award is a salute to community volunteers and honors grassroot activism, individual dedication, and the spirit of giving with no strings attached,

Her dad and I are very proud of her.
